Ruben Amorim admits Man Utd mistakes and vows to not repeat them at AC Milan | Football

Ruben Amorim has admitted he made mistakes as Manchester United manager and does not intend to repeat them at AC Milan.

The Portuguese had a turgid spell in charge of the Red Devils from November 2024 to January 2026, during which time he won just 24 of 63 matches.

After becoming one of the most highly-rated young managers at Sporting, his stint in the Premier League damaged his reputation somewhat, although he is far from the first manager to struggle at Old Trafford.

AC Milan hired him in June, giving him the chance to prove he can handle a giant club and he is unbeaten in his first five Serie A games, with there wins and two draws.

On Sunday Milan comfortably beat Lecce 3-0 at the San Siro, with goals from Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira.

Amorim is keen to be more flexible with his tactics in Italy, having been very stubborn on sticking to his 3-4-3 formation with Manchester United, which never seemed to get the best out of his players.

He is already showing more willingness to adapt with Milan and spoke of learning from mistakes after the win over Lecce.

‘Today the players had more freedom; in recent games we were a bit too static, stuck,’ he said, via Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘I can’t repeat my mistakes from Manchester. If we don’t have the characteristics to play a certain way, we have to adapt.

‘We’ll go back to building with three [at the back], but we’ll see. Here in Italy, the coaches are very good, especially at going after other teams one-on-one.’

Amorim’s team is not the only unbeaten one in Serie A, with Roma, Inter and Lazio all on 13 points from five games.

The AC Milan boss is comfortable with being just two points behind them at this stage, though, especially as he felt his team could have won both games they drew.

We need to be balanced in our assessments, but we deserved more points. Against Lazio, we deserved more, and against Juve, we conceded a goal at the end.” For a coach two points behind first place, this gives us hope.’

Belgium international Alexis Saelemaekers said after the Lecce win: ‘I think we are players who speak the same football language, we understand each other with just a glance. The coach is trying to transmit his mentality, and everyone who came off the bench gave their contribution too, including Moreira with a great goal.

‘This proves there is something really special in this group.’
