Woman, 21, dies in 130ft bungee jump horror after ‘staff fail to secure safety rope’

Horror footage of the moment a 21-year-old woman lost her life in a bungee jumping accident has gone viral after it appeared staff at the site in Limeira, Brazil, did not secure a safety rope.

According to reports in Brazilian media, 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas has been identified as the victim of the tragedy.

Maria Eduarda was seen being thrown by employees of the company Entre Cordas, according to CNN Brazil, and staff did not realise that she was not yet secured.

She was was treated by SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) professionals at the scene but died from her injures. The incident occurred on Ponte do Esqueleto, known as the Skeleton Bridge.

Maria Eduarda was employed as a physical education professional at a Sau Paulo gym in Jandira. Her gym paid tribute to her following news of her death.

Three men have since been arrested over her death after they were unable to explain to the Civil Police how the tragedy occurred.

Two of the men in charge of preparing the victim for the jump stated that they did not remember what happened.

On-duty police office Andréa Dantas said: “They can’t remember what the mistake was there, who should have put the rope in place, if there was no supervision. They can’t remember.”

In the footage, there can be voices heard trying to get the attention of staff as they carried Maria Eduarda closer to the edge.

“The rope!” shouted one witness. Then another person repeated: “Guys, the rope!” Although no yells for stop were heard before the tragedy.

Chillingly, Maria Eduarda posted on Instagram just minutes before the bungee jump. She wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”

The Limeira City Council has confirmed that it will file a complaint against the Brazilian federal government over the site as it has been a known risk for years, according to the local mayor.

Mayor of Limeira Murilo Félix said: “It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that has presented known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protection measures.”
