Thief tries to drive stolen car with handbrake on before ‘soiling himself’ when nicked
Onlooker Adam Breen, who filmed the incident, claimed to have pounced on the man to make a citizen’s arrest and said in a video, “the cherry on top was” that he had an accident
A bungling thief tried to make off in a stolen car with its handbrake still on – then soiled himself when a have-a-go hero stopped him.
The suspect is said to have nicked six bottles of booze from a liquor store before trying to flee in a battered Mazda. But hilarious footage filmed by a passer-by shows the motor moving agonisingly slowly around the car park of Dan Murphy’s bottle shop.
The man also appeared to try to drive away without taking off the handbrake. Onlooker Adam Breen, who filmed the incident, claimed to have pounced on the man to make a citizen’s arrest and said in a video: “The cherry on top was that he s*** himself.”
The bizarre incident happened in Perth, Western Australia, and saw the grey CX-5 – which had no number plates, a damaged bumper and a missing side mirror – leave tyre marks as it struggled to gain momentum in front of bemused onlookers.
Adam, a 28-year-old plumber, shared the video to Instagram and can be seen laughing at the attempted getaway. At one point, he is heard chuckling “you are joking?” as the car turns onto a busy road with its rear wheels still locked.
He told followers the situation had escalated after he was forced to confront the alleged car thief in a nearby park after he abandoned his first motor and tried to break into some more cars.
Warning: foul language
Sporting a shiner, he told the camera: “There were kids over there, so I went and grabbed him and took him down. I had him in a body triangle and my left nut was in agony. So I bridged him up and gone to adjust my left nut.
“As I’ve put him in a rear naked [choke hold], he cracked me with a headbutt, so I’ve got a bit of a shiner. And the cherry on top was that she s*** himself, he soiled his pants.
“I was very glad to see the police pull up, I was worried the squeeze I had on him was going to inject some of that out of his pants. I’ve never been so glad to see the police. He was like ‘oh look at your eye’, and I was like ‘mate check your pants’.”
He told local media: “A pretty odd night… but Dan Murphy’s gave me the six pack (of beer) for free.”
Footage of the drama was widely shared on social media, with locals praising Adam’s brave efforts. The official accounts of drinks brand Solo Australia wrote: “Our hero.”
Another person said: “Somebody buy this guy a few beers for me please.” Someone else told him: “Doing god’s work. Streets are safer thanks to you, lad.”
