A brave man who had his nose bitten off while protecting a woman from a terrifying ‘strangler’ says it was ‘worth it’.
Zeng Falin, 69, leapt to the aid of an unnamed female cyclist in his local village in China’s Hunan province, when she was pulled from her bike by a man in his twenties who allegedly began strangling her.
The man had reportedly been on a ‘violent rampage’ around the village during which he allegedly attacked passers-by and kicked down doors.
Fearing that the police would not be able to respond in time, Zeng confronted the man and desperately tried to wrestle him away from his alleged victim, according to the South China Morning Post.
The heroic Zeng was joined by two other passers-by who fought tirelessly to separate the cyclist from the alleged attacker. During the melee, Zeng suffered a vicious bite to the face which ripped off most of his nose.
Despite bleeding profusely, Zeng held onto the alleged attacker in order to restrain him until police arrived, at which point he was taken to hospital.
Doctors quickly realised that the extent of his injuries meant any sort of reconstruction would be incredibly difficult and expensive.
However fundraising efforts helped raise the equivalent of around £8,000 for a series of complex surgeries, with the process of building a brand new nose expected to take at least six months.
So far, the brave bloke has undergone two surgeries, during which skin was taken from elsewhere on his body to fashion two nostrils in order to help him breathe properly.
According to reports, Zeng was orphaned as a child, growing up with the support of local villagers. He admitted he was glad to have given back to the community, saying that “compared with saving a life, everything I have given is worth it.”
The brave man has since been added to a list of official heroes in his native China. The case remains under investigation by police, who say that the outburst was caused by a loss of emotional control.
