Husband utters three heartbreaking words to wife before her bungee jump horror death
WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT A mother-of-three died after plunging 100ft during a free-fly jump in Kazakhstan when a safety rope failed to hold, leaving her husband Alexander Tkachenko devastated after watching the tragedy unfold before his eyes.
A mother plummeted 100ft to her death during a botched bungee jump which ended in tragedy as her husband watched on helplessly.
Yevgenia Leontyeva, 33, died in the “free-flying” extreme sport in Kazakhstan, with the instructor, Alexander Muznikas, sentenced to four years in prison following the horrific incident.
Her husband, Alexander Tkachenko, was forced to look on in the devastating moment his wife lost her life in front of him, a court in Kazakhstan heard. He said: “My wife was crushed before my eyes.”
The mother let her friend jump first, and that “rope free-flying” leap proved successful, the court in Karaganda was told in 2022, according to News.com.au.
Witnesses said Yevgenia appeared “afraid” – yet they heard the instructor encouraging her to jump regardless. The instructor said: “It’s not the first time you’ve jumped. You know how to do it. Did I put a safety harness on you for nothing?”
She is then seen in a deeply distressing video leaping from the rooftop moments after her husband Alexander Tkachenko told her “I love you”.
The 33-year-old then crashed into an iron fence on the ground after a supporting rope had not been properly fastened to a tree.
Screams erupted from bystanders on the roof while those watching below were seen rushing to her aid following the catastrophic fall.
A cross-line to which her rope was attached – and which was supposed to break her fall leaving her suspended above the ground – failed to hold. According to local reports, a man was seen collapsing to the ground as she plummeted towards the earth.
He is understood to have been gripping the safety line which should have been secured to the tree, and he was knocked down by the force of her descent pulling on the unfastened rope.
Her grieving husband said: “After her fall, I knelt beside her. He [the instructor] came, but I don’t remember what happened then. She was still breathing.”
“I came to support my wife. My wife was crushed before my eyes – I was in shock and panic. It was clearly the employee’s fault.
“They did not coordinate their actions. The instructor didn’t look down to make sure the rope was tied. I don’t wish this on anyone, and he must serve time in jail. This, of course, will not return my spouse and mother of my children….”
The mother sustained a severe skull fracture, brain injuries, and multiple right-sided fractures. She was rushed to hospital but quickly died of her injuries.
A friend of the victim, Anton Shevelev, told the court he had asked the instructor take off the harness because Yevgania was “afraid to jump” and they would “go home”. However, Muznikas persuaded her to proceed with the jump, he said.
Yevgenia had three boys under 14, two of her own, and the son of a relative who had passed away.
Before the accident, Yevgenia and her friend had posted ‘Live it up’ and ‘We’re going to fly’ on social media.
Muznikas was found guilty of providing services which failed to meet safety standards and causing death through negligence. He was handed a four-year prison sentence.
