Man wakes from seven year coma to find loving wife sucking his toes and nibbling feet

A hero husband who fell into a coma rescuing a small child awoke to find his wife nibbling at his feet in a desperate attempt to wake him up – years after the same act caused him to move his eyes

A have-a-go-hero who fell into a seven year coma woke up to find his wife nibbling and sucking on his toes – and told her “I love you” as he came round to the strange scene.

Song Mei, from China, elected to go for a nibble on her husband’s feet because she thought the act might stimulate nerve endings, having also attempted on several occasions to do the same to his fingers.

Song, 45, had spent years trying everything she could to wake her husband, having given up work and spent the pair’s life savings on his treatment. The loving wife was even producing paintings which she sold online to raise funds.

The Chinese national was working as a kindergarten art teacher in the country’s Henan province when Zhao Jinqian her husband was struck by a tragic accident.

In October 2019, Zhao climbed onto a warehouse roof in order to rescue a three-year-old child that had become stuck, according to South China Morning Post.

The good Samaritan unfortunately fell during the rescue, tumbling around six metres and apparently using his body as a shield in a desperate attempt to protect the child.

Incredibly, the child survived the fall without any serious injury, although Zhao was not so lucky, landing directly on his head and therefore suffering several fractures and severe brain damage.

As well as money raised by his wife Song, the father of the rescued boy is also believed to have contributed to Zhao’s healthcare, raising around 45,000 yuan (£5000) to help pay for the long and arduous treatment.

Thankfully, in 2024, during a session of oral stimulation on his toes, Zhao showed signs of movement, and this year on June 30 he reportedly responded to the unusual treatment by saying “Song Mei, I love you”, as well as by showing some signs of movement.

As well as toe nibbling, Song has also been known to chat and sing to her comatose husband, and reportedly slept around 4 hours a day in order to spend as much time as she could helping him.

Writing about the couple’s arduous by inspiring journey, Song took to social media: and wrote: “Everyone says the road ahead is difficult, but husband and wife are meant to weather hardship together. I do not know the best cure, but I am willing to keep going through all the long years.”
