Global earthquake chaos explained as Doomsday preachers warn it is ‘beginning of the end’
With the planet rocked by a succession of powerful earthquakes in several countries this week, many are questioning whether or not the flurry of seismic activity is connected.
On top of the deadly twin quakes that hit Venezuela killing hundreds and leaving thousands more missing, monster tremors have been felt in California and Japan, measuring in at 5.6 and 7.2 respectively on the Richter Scale.
Neither the quake off the coast of Japan nor the one experienced in California have resulted in any casualties, despite the latter being the most powerful tremor recorded in the state in over 90 years.
Mega earthquakes have also been recorded in Guadeloupe, Pakistan, Alaska and the Philippines in the last 24 hours, with all four measuring between 4.5 and 5.1 on the scale.
Despite the flutter of powerful tectonic activity, experts are stressing that the multiple quakes do not appear to be connected, especially powerful ones that hit Venezuela and Japan.
Speaking to the Guardian, geology Boffin William Barnhart believes they were merely “a coincidence.”
The assistant coordinator for the US Geological Survey’s earthquake hazards program explained: ““Earthquakes happen every day all over the world. Most of them happen far from people.
“Yesterday was just a very peculiar day where you had a couple of fairly significant earthquakes happen in areas where people felt them.”
However many remain convinced that there is a route cause to all these earthquakes, with several evangelical Christian organisations suggesting that their cause may be biblical.
Prolific Doomsday predictors End Time are leading the charge, claiming that “Jesus warned that the last days would be marked by “earthquakes in diverse places” as part of the beginning of sorrows.”
Another radical blog called Faith the Evidence argued that the quakes should be seen as “reminders that we live in a broken world that is eagerly awaiting God’s ultimate restoration.”
A third organisation called Life Hope and Truth, also put forward the suggestion that earthquakes could signal the end of days, saying: “The Bible predicts a number of earth-shattering events prior to the return of Christ—the time spoken of in the Bible as “the time of the end”.
“Worsening natural disasters are looming on the horizon. As we will see, there is a strong link between these disasters and God’s warnings for people to repent of their sins.”
However the view that these or any earthquakes could signal some sort of Doomsday event are not held by any mainstream Christian church.
