American Airlines Turns to Starlink for Faster Wi-Fi Across More Than 500 Narrowbody Jets

American Airlines announced today that it will install Starlink satellite internet on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft. The project focuses on planes that handle most domestic flights and shorter international routes. Installation begins in the first quarter of 2027. New Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft will receive the equipment as they join the fleet. Boeing narrowbody models keep their current Viasat service for now.

Starlink has thousands of satellites, all of which orbit quite close to Earth, and this proximity allows data to and from a plane to be transmitted much more quickly. This is a significant advantage when it comes to reducing lag and achieving higher speeds than older satellite systems that are far out in orbit. Each of these planes receives a unique Starlink terminal capable of transmitting up to a gigabit of data per second. Thatโ€™s enough bandwidth for many passengers to stream video, participate in video conversations, play online games, or simply surf the web without encountering the annoying slowdowns that frequently occur on packed flights.

Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the airline chose Starlink to meet what customers actually need during travel. She noted that people will spend less time worrying about slow loads or unreliable connections when they want to work with live documents, join meetings, or stay in touch throughout a flight. The goal centers on delivering performance close to what most people experience at home.

Jason Fritch, vice president of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, said the addition gives passengers and crew a consistent connection from the departure gate all the way to arrival. He added that the service makes flights more productive and comfortable for both business and leisure travelers. American reviewed other satellite options, including Amazonโ€™s competing system, before selecting Starlink. The airline already offers free Wi-Fi to many AAdvantage members on equipped planes. Starlink adds stronger performance on top of that access for the narrowbody portion of the fleet.

Many other major carriers have used Starlink on some of their planes, and Americanโ€™s move now extends this level of service to many of its single aisle planes, which are where the majority of people fly anyhow. The wide body planes will cling to what they have. When Starlink is fully operational on the first planes in 2027, travelers will notice a significant improvement in their internet experience. Everyday tasks such as loading web sites, watching videos without freezing, and utilizing collaboration tools become much easier when multiple devices are online at the same time.
