Kai Trump has undergone surgery on her left wrist, the granddaughter of President Donald Trump announced on social media on Wednesday.
The injury occurred during her first tournament of the season with the University of Miami golf team, she said, without disclosing how severe it was.
“While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” she wrote on social media.
“It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination.”
The freshman is one of nine players listed on Miami’s roster. Her season with the Hurricanes has begun with a setback as a result of the operation.
Miami have made a strong start as a team, winning two of their three events this season and finishing runner-up in the other.
That record has the Hurricanes at No. 7 in the national rankings.
“For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process,” she wrote in her post. “I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love.”
Kai made her professional debut last November, and revealed the advice she received from her grandfather prior to the event.
When asked what he had told her, Kai responded: “Go out there and have fun. Just don’t get nervous.”
Trump did not attend the tournament due to other commitments, but this did not appear to bother Kai.
“He’s running the world right now, so a little busy,” she said when asked about his absence. Kai also described him as “just a normal grandpa. Always has been.”
She confirmed they play golf together, though she remained tight-lipped about who typically wins their “tight matches,” adding, “We play a lot. We have a great time out there. We’re always on the same team as well.”
However, the pair will not be able to take to the course in the near future after Kai’s decision to undergo surgery.
