Sublime Matt Renshaw century leads Australia fightback in first Test against South Africa

Matt Renshaw made a superb 190 to help Australia take command of the first Test against South Africa in Durban.

Returning to South Africa eight years on from the sandpaper ball-tampering scandal, Australia mounted a recovery on day two after the Proteas’ bowlers had made a strong start, reducing the tourists to 187 for six before bad light had forced an early end on Friday.

Resuming 46 not out alongside captain Pat Cummins, Renshaw went on to craft a first Test century since January 2017 as Australia were all out for 390, with South Africa finishing day two at 27 for one.

After Cummins was out for 43, Renshaw went on to dig in alongside number 10 Nathan Lyon to make a 134 stand before eventually being dismissed in the first over after tea.

South Africa’s reply got off to a sluggish start when Ryan Rickelton was out to Josh Hazlewood for a three-ball duck in the second over before Aiden Markram (15 not out) and David Bedingham (12 not out) saw the hosts through to the close without further loss.
