Tesla Emergency Drive Away Lets Owners Leave a Supercharger Still Plugged In

Tesla Charging posted a brief demo today and a short line under it. Emergency Drive Away lets you shift into Drive while still plugged into a Supercharger. For anyone who has sat in a stall with the cable locked into the port, that sentence rewrites a rule the cars have enforced for years.
Until now, the car refused to leave Park with a charge cable seated. If you wanted to get out, you had to tap the touchscreen, use your phone app, or press the button on the door handle while sitting there waiting for the latch to release. In a lot where someone is firing a gun, those seconds are the whole problem. They resolved the issue with Software Update 2026.38.3. When you hit the brake and shift into drive while the charge cable is still plugged in, an Emergency Drive Away prompt appears on your main display. Coverage of the release notes also describes the same confirmation if the shifter goes to Reverse. No stall hardware has to change. Asked whether sites need new equipment, the company answered that it works at every Supercharger in the United States.

Damage is part of the design, and Tesla says so in plain terms. Using this feature will damage both your automobile and the charger. The in-car warning warnings state that short video clips will be sent to Tesla and that this is only for emergencies. The car expects to break the connector, charge port, and cable to bits, so just let it happen and notify Tesla when it is safe to do so using your app or roadside help.

Deliberate misuse will bring additional penalties, but Tesla has not said what those penalties are. Max de Zegher, the man in charge of charging in North America, hopes no one ever uses it in such a dangerous manner, knowing the standard get out in time. He wrote that the company picks Supercharger sites with safety in mind and moves locations it judges unsafe, and that the goal is still for people to feel fine stepping out to unplug. He also said the team went back and forth on this for years before deciding to offer it, and asked owners not to abuse it so the company does not have to restrict it.
The Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X built in 2021 or later will benefit from this capability. The Model S and Model X models released before 2021 are excluded, and the feature is currently only available in the United States. Canadian Superchargers employ similar equipment, so it is not surprising that it will eventually make its way north of the border, but donโt hold your breath.
