DoorDash Air Drone Lifts Ordinary Restaurant Orders Over Northern California Streets

DoorDash spent years watching other companies fly food, then decided the aircraft should come last. On September 30, 2026, at its Dash Forward event, the company showed DoorDash Air, a six-propeller drone it designed and assembles in San Francisco, paired with kitchen loading gear and software that already sorts millions of orders a day. Early pilot flights are set for Northern California in the coming months, with reporting pointing to the East Bay. Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and the local shop Momo N Curry are the first restaurants signed on.

Harrison Shih, the head of DoorDash Air, revealed that his team began by studying what people actually order and how a kitchen operates, and then designed the machine from the ground up around that. DoorDash has already looked at its own US restaurant data and determined that approximately 80% of orders are light, short orders that the aircraft can easily transport; but, distance and weather will reduce that number. In early experiments, the service was limited to short trips and smaller meals, with an average delivery time from restaurant to door of less than 5 minutes. Keep in mind that these are only estimates, not promises. The arms have six slow-spinning propellers to reduce vibration, and DoorDash claims that the sound at delivery height is comparable to that of a car moving down the street. A winch lowers the bag to the consumer while the aircraft hovers, so it never needs to land in a driveway.

When an order qualifies, customers in the pilot region will see a drone option inside the DoorDash app, and they can trace the entire process, from preparation to launch to descent, on a tracking screen. They’ve added routing, which sits within the same system that they now use to select between a Dasher, one of their sidewalk robots, a partner drone, and this new aircraft. They consider a variety of criteria before making a decision, including order size, preparation time, weather, flying distance, and street traffic. The best thing is that restaurants do not need to renovate their kitchens at all. There is just a place for loading stations and smart scales close to the current handoff, and the drones are stored in nearby nests rather than on the roof. Popeyes employees stated that the company’s operations remain unchanged because workers may simply pass meals as usual. The proprietor of Momo N Curry stated that they have a tiny front-of-house personnel and that an extra step would be unnecessary because the handoff must be simplified.

FAA Part 135 air carrier certification arrived in July 2026, making DoorDash Labs the eighth U.S. operator cleared to run commercial drone flights. That certificate focuses on the airline part of their business. Their initial flights will still be brief and monitored, but they’re waiting to see how federal regulations play out before they can fly beyond what a pilot can observe. DoorDash has already flown tens of thousands of orders through other companies such as Alphabet’s Wing and Israel’s Flytrex, including a Dallas Fort Worth service launched in 2025. Those partnerships are still going strong.
