Researchers at MIT built ShiftLens so a printed chemical bottle can turn red and show an exclamation mark while its cap sits loose, then switch to green with a checkmark the moment you screw it down tight. The same printed surface can flip a door plaque between “Please Come In” and “Meeting in Progress,” run a flame animation across a lampshade, or let each square on a tic-tac-toe board display an X, an O, or nothing at all.
ShiftLens spreads a sheet of tiny cylindrical lenses over a hidden pattern of color stripes printed directly into the item. Each lens focuses on only one set of stripes at a time, and when you shift the top bit slightly relative to the ones below, a new set appears, allowing the entire device to change appearance without the use of batteries, screens, or sensors.
